Dabeli originated in the Kutch region of Gujarat and has since become one of India's
most beloved street foods. Often called "Kutchi Dabeli" in honour of its birthplace,
this ingenious snack was created in the 1960s and quickly spread throughout Gujarat,
Mumbai, and beyond. At RAS Indian Mart & Eatery, we prepare our dabeli using
authentic recipes and techniques that honour this rich culinary heritage.
What makes dabeli unique is its signature masala—a complex spice blend that includes
dried coconut, coriander, cumin, red chilli, cinnamon, cloves, and a hint of sugar
that gives the potato filling its characteristic sweet-spicy profile. This masala is
mixed with perfectly mashed potatoes to create a filling that's unlike anything else
in Indian cuisine. The interplay of textures and flavours is what makes dabeli so
addictively delicious.
Our dabeli is assembled with care: soft pav buns are sliced and toasted with butter,
then spread with layers of sweet-sour tamarind date chutney and spicy garlic chutney.
The spiced potato filling is added, followed by fresh pomegranate seeds that burst
with juicy sweetness, crunchy roasted peanuts for texture, and finally a generous
shower of crispy sev. The result is a symphony of flavours and textures in every
bite—sweet, spicy, tangy, crunchy, and soft all at once.
